Magnet Program
Program Description
Wesley Elementary is classified as a School-Wide Magnet Program (SWP). All students in grades kindergarten through 5 who live within our attendance zone and attend our school will automatically participate in our Magnet program; there is no need for them to apply.
Like all other Magnet programs in Houston ISD, Wesley’s Magnet program is a school of choice developed to serve students with specialized interests, talents and needs, specifically in the area of Life Science. The following serves as the underlying framework of our Magnet program:
• Wesley Elementary offers an enriched curriculum designed around college and career readiness in the area of Life Science that strives to meet students’ interests, talents and needs in this field and has relevance in today’s society.
• Wesley Elementary strives to provide an ethnically diverse student body so that students gain the experience needed to live in a multicultural society.
• Wesley Elementary accepts, within its enrollment goal, students who have a strong interest in Life Science and who have met the selection criteria outlined for our program (see Selection Criteria).
• Wesley Elementary strives to increase student access to our Magnet program through the district’s awareness activities, transfer procedures, and transportation policies.
• Wesley Elementary actively encourages parent, community and business involvement.
Applying to the Magnet Program
A child is eligible for Magnet Transfer if he or she is zoned to Houston ISD, is NOT zoned to attend Wesley Elementary, and is:
- Enrolling in Kindergarten or HISD for the first time, or
- Enrolling in 1st grade or higher and
- Has a 75% average in all core subjects on their final report card, and
- Satisfies the conduct requirements for entry (see Selection Criteria)
